The concept of vocational education in Indian context has got very much to do with Gandhi's system of Education. His system of education, unlike the other prominent systems gave more importance to character building, self development and self sufficiency. The organizations like NSS were started getting inspired from Gandhian vocational education and service. By learning some useful manual vocation a person increases his prospects in the job sector.

In today's society there is a general tendency to look down upon blue collar jobs, jobs that require physical effort and look up to white collar jobs. The job of a hawker (someone who travels about selling his wares) or that of a peddler does not come below in rank to that of a doctor's or of an engineer's. In today's flimsy (unstable) economic situation it is always better to know some skills to keep oneself from getting fired (to lose one's job). It bolsters up (supports) our confidence level and keeps our line of supply intact. In traditional education we acquire so much amount of unproductive knowledge which may not help us in our day to day situations

However, in vocational education we acquire practical knowledge that prepares us for skill oriented jobs. It also offers the scope of starting one's own business independently. There are many vocational courses in which one can be successful.

Some vocational studies include cooking, Videography. Audio editing, Book binding, Computer Hardware, Carpentry, Stenography, mechanic, machinist, plumber etc.
