The world famous writer Tolstoy had a profound influence upon Gandhiji’s life and thoughts. His book The Kingdom of God is within You greatly shaped Gandhiji’s later philosophy.  Independent thinking, profound morality and truthfulness of this book attracted Gandhiji a great deal. He then tried to inculcate the ideas of  his favorite writer Tolstoy in a farm he settled at South Africa. It was founded in 1910. The main aim of the farm was ”the all-round development of the boys and girls”.

Gandhiji introduced vocational training as part of this farm. The schedule of the camp was in the manner that eight hours were devoted for manual labor and two hours for book learning. The activities of the camp included general labor, cooking, scavenging, sandal-making and carpentry.

In doing all these things the main aim of Gandhiji was to inculcate the ideas of social service and citizenship training. Gandhiji believed that it was possible to develop these good qualities in children during their formative years. This helped the inmates of the camp to become self-reliant (to depend upon oneself). The valuable educational insights he received from adopting these methods helped him to develop his own system of education which he called the Basic Education (1937). Some of the observations that he made out of this system are as follow:

Aims of Education according to Gandhiji

1.       The complete and all round development of personality.

2.       To achieve practical ends.

3.       World peace.

4.       To create Rama Rajya. (Rama is the sense of justice that every individual possesses)

5.       Medium of instruction should be mother tongue.

6.       At least one manual labor skill should be included in the curriculum.

7.       Citizenship training.

8.       Free and compulsory education until the age of 14.
