"നാലപ്പാട്ട് പാമ്പിൻ കാവിൽ അനവധി വർഷങ്ങളായി വളർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്ന നീർമാതളമരം പൂക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് നാട്ടിൽ വന്നെത്തുവാൻ, കൽക്കത്തയിൽ ഒരു വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായി ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന എനിക്ക് എല്ലാവർഷവും സാധിച്ചില്ല. ഇന്നും ആ മരം പൂക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാനവിടെ എത്താറില്ല. എങ്കിലും ,എൻറെ അടച്ച കൺപോളകൾക്ക് പിന്നിൽ ,വെണ്ണ വർണ്ണമുള്ള പൂക്കളും വഹിച്ച്‌ , തലയെടുപ്പോടെ നിൽക്കുന്ന ആ മരം, വൈകാരിക സുരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രതീകം കണക്ക് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. അതിൻറെ ഗന്ധം, സ്മരണയുടെ രാജവീഥികളിൽ തളം കെട്ടുന്നു. നീർമാതളമരം പൂക്കുന്നത് കേവലം ഒരു ആഴ്ചക്കാലത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ്. പുതുമഴയുടെ സുഗന്ധം മണ്ണിൽനിന്നുയർന്നാൽ നീർമാതളം പൂക്കാറായി എന്ന് വിചാരിക്കാം. പൂക്കൾ വന്നു നിറഞ്ഞാൽ ഇലകൾ കൊഴിയുകയും ചെയ്യും. പാടത്തിനപ്പുറത്ത് ആശാരിപറമ്പിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നവരുടെ നാസാരന്ധ്രങ്ങളിലും ഒരു അനുഗ്രഹം എന്നപോലെ ആ പൂക്കളുടെ പരിമളം വന്നെത്തും ...ആ മരത്തിൽ പടർന്ന രംഗൂൺ ക്രീപ്പറുടെ വള്ളികളിൽ എല്ലാമാസവും കുറച്ചു പൂക്കൾ കാണാം; വെളുത്തവയും, ചുവന്നവയും. അവയ്ക്കുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു ഹൃദ്യമായൊരു സൗരഭ്യം. തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ കാറ്റ് വീശുമ്പോൾ,സന്ധ്യ ഇരുളിൽ താഴ്ത്തിയ മുറ്റത്ത് അ

Appreciation of the Poem On Killing a Tree

“Earth is all that we have in common”: We forget this simple principle. Knowingly and unknowingly we pave way for the funeral of our own earth. Killing a Tree is a simple act but when it is done in a macroscopic level, it is highly destructive to nature. Indian poet Gieve Patel discusses this idea in his poem “On Killing a Tree”. He begins the poem by declaring that killing a tree is not a simple task but says: “It takes much time to kill a tree/Not a simple jab of knife will do it”. He then discusses the tree as a thief who without permission, consumed the earth, feeding upon its crust, absorbing years of sunlight, air water etc. The poet cleverly tries to present the existence of tree itself as a sinful act. From the very beginning itself, we can understand that the poet is equating the life of the tree with the life of a human being. Just like human being who is an emotional being, the poet treats the tree also in the same manner. In the advance stanza

This quality of leaving one’s present world to enjoy a better world of imagination is not only something that the children possess but also the adults. The poem ‘Song of a Dream’ written by Sarojini Naidu is a perfect example for this statement. In the poem she sings of one of her dreams in which she stood alone in a magical wood. She says: her soul was immersed in deep visions which were products of fantasy that sprang like poppies. She then goes through a unique experience where she meets the spirits of truth who sang, the spirits of love who glowed and the spirits of peace that flowed like divine streams. She
