“To cure the ills of the senses by means of
the soul, and the soul by means of the senses” summarizes the entire book. It
is nothing short of the esthetic movement’s dogma. Dorian, who loses himself in
the world of art and beauty, is a character who deserves to be studied in
detail. While reading the novel, one loses into the florid world of art and
wishes to remain in that place for some time; untouched by reality lolling in
the world of beauty. I think, The Picuture of Dorian Gray and the like are needed in the 21st
century to remind it that it needs to revitalize its over sensitized sensibilities
and delve deeper into the sheer beauty of art.
