Appreciation of the song Bang the Drum

            The song “Bang the Drum” by Bryan Adams & Nelly Furtado was performed during the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada as a tribute (something given as an expression of esteem) to the athletes. It is an exhortation call for all sportsmen and a wonderful source of encouragement that shows the indomitable (impossible to put down) spirit of sportsmanship.

            In the song 'Bang the Drum', the songwriters ask the sportsmen to do their best without considering the end results. They ask us to give more focus on taking part in the game. In other words the song introduces the idea that failures can happen but the lessons those failures teach us are more important than the act of winning an Olympic gold medal. (It’s not about winning/ It’s all about playing the game).

 

 

            Being the greatest event of the world, participants from across the globe (From the East/From the West) enthusiastically take part in the game.  The refrain beginning with the lines “Bang the Drum a little louder”/So the whole world can hear” carries the whole energy of the song. It reminds the world that abandoning wars and conflicts, we as human beings can work together to explore the possibilities of human spirit.

            The song also includes inspiring lines like “dream big/aim high/believe you can fly”. These lines energize the athletes and resound the motto of Olympic games: “Faster, Higher, Stronger”. The main appeal of the song is its simplicity in music and lyrics. This song will forever remain as an important tribute song ever written for athletes.
